Preventing Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is something that affects over 75% of adults in their lifetime. Many adults do not even realize that they have the gum disease unless they participate in their annual dental checkups. If left untreated, this disease can turn in to more than just gum disease and cause many health problems. Cross Creek Dental would like to share a few ways to help prevent periodontal disease.

Teeth Brushing

Teeth brushing is something that should be done at the minimum twice a day. It is also good to do this after a meal. The proper way to brush teeth is important in preventing gum disease. The toothbrush should be at a 40-45 degree angle and small back and forth strokes should be done on each tooth. The outer and inner surfaces of the teeth should also be brushed in small, back and forth strokes. On the insides of teeth, up and down motions should be made with the brush to properly clean them. The tongue and upper part of the mouth should be brushed as well to clean germs and prevent them from building up.


Flossing should be done at the minimum once a day but it is good to do this after a meal as well. Proper flossing prevents the plaque from building up between the teeth. If this plaque is allowed to build up, it can not only cause gum disease but can cause harm to the enamel between teeth which causes cavities.

Balanced Diet

A diet full of sugar and starches can lead to increased plaque build up in the teeth. It is essential to have a well-balanced diet that is full of all types of vitamins to keep the teeth healthy and strong and prevent any gum disease from forming. Calcium and Vitamin D are among the most important for healthy teeth and gums.

Avoid Tobacco Use

Tobacco weakens the body’s immune system so it is harder to fight off any infections that occur in the gums. Once there is an infection, the healing time is much longer for a smoker which can cause break down if the bone and teeth, eventually leading them to fall out.

Periodontal disease is linked to many other problems like heart disease and stroke. By going to the dentist for teeth cleaning regularly, plaque can be removed and prevent gum disease from forming or getting worse. Get your annual checkups scheduled.
